When dealing with heavy loads that could benefit from extra flexibility, synthetic round slings are the way to go. Synthetic round slings are typically made from nylon or polyester yarns or webbing. Round slings are up to the challenge of providing power for heavy lifts, with either single or multi path designs, they offer flexibility and durability for heavy loads.
When to Choose a Synthetic Round Sling
Unlike synthetic web slings, synthetic round slings are constructed from a continuous loop of fibers rather than being flat. This round design offers more flexibility than web slings, making them a good choice when lifting something that needs to conform to the shape of the material being lifted. This also helps protect materials from scratches or dents. Synthetic web slings are often used for loads that need a bit of extra care and are too heavy for other types of slings to handle.
Using Synthetic Round Slings
Just like with all other equipment, be sure to review the label before use and follow its limits. Do not use with loads that are heavier the listed capacity on the tag. Properly hitch them and avoid dragging them. Make sure synthetic round slings are stored in a safe place away from exposure to UV light, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
Performing Inspections
Synthetic round slings require daily, pre-operational inspections prior to each shift. Daily inspections should check slings for damage, tears, abrasions, and wearing, as well as tags, hardware, and load capacity. Annual inspections are also required and should be performed by a qualified professional once a year.
Daily Inspections
- ID tags: Ensure that any and all tags are readable and that none of them are missing.
- Material: Look over the material to be sure there are no spots that are melted, charred, or burned. Also make sure to inspect it for knots or brittle areas that may compromise its performance.
- Wear and tear: Be sure to also check for general wear and tear, and do not use the sling if you notice any visible or obvious signs of damage.
Annual Inspections
OHSA 1910.184 requires yearly inspections for synthetic web slings to ensure that they are in proper working condition. These involve a more thorough inspection than daily checks.
