Chain Slings and Alloy Lifting Chains: Benefits, Use, and Inspections

For jobs that require extra strength, chain slings or alloy lifting chains are up to the job. Chain slings are often used to raise heavy or oddly shaped loads. Many chain slings are constructed with alloy steel, which is durable and perfect for use in extreme environments; this makes chain slings a great choice for a variety of industries and conditions.

Benefits of Chain Slings

Because of their strength and durability, alloy chain slings can typically lift heavier loads than other types of slings, such as synthetic web slings. They can withstand high temperatures, making them ideal when working with hot materials. Chain slings are also more resistant to cuts and abrasions than other types of slings, because of the durability of their construction.

Using Chain Slings

Before using a chain sling or alloy lifting chain, it’s crucial to perform a daily inspection to be sure it’s ready for use. Make sure the tag is readable, and do not use the chain sling with loads above the listed capacity. If working with hot materials, review the sling’s temperature limits to avoid stretching or melting. Be sure to properly hitch slings, and pad sharp edges. Avoid dragging the slings or pulling them out from under a load if the load is sitting on the sling. This can cause kinks and other damage. It’s also important to store chain slings in safe places and away from potential damage, such as extreme temperatures or moisture.

Performing Daily Inspections

Prior to operation before each shift, slings must be inspected by the sling operator. Here are some of the important elements to check:

  • Ensure ID tags are present and readable
  • Inspect links and fittings for damage or rust
  • Check for melted or charred areas as well as burns
  • Look for abrasions or elongation

Performing Annual Inspections

In addition to daily inspections, annual inspections are required for chain slings per OSHA 1910.184. Annual checks ensure that your gear is reliable and in proper working condition, up to the challenge of lifting heavy loads, even in extreme conditions.
