Everything to Look for In a Wire Rope & Cable Inspection

Since 1950, Olsen Chain & Cable has been the trusted supplier of overhead lifting equipment. Founded by Gene Olsen, an ironworker from the Twin Cities, the company started with Gene splicing wire rope slings in his garage. As the construction industry grew, we realized the importance of not only providing quality products, but also of providing education, equipment, and services to help you keep your jobsite safe. We’ve put together a guide to help you learn what you need to look for when doing your next wire rope and cable inspection.

Importance of Wire Rope and Cable Safety

Wire rope and cable are crucial in lifting and rigging operations. Ensuring their safety and proper maintenance is essential to prevent accidents and extend their lifespan. Olsen Chain & Cable provides reliable products and expert advice to help you safely lift and control even the most challenging loads.

Use and Care of Wire Rope and Cable

Proper use and care are vital for the maximum service and safety of wire rope and cable:

  • Lubrication: Generally, no additional lubrication is needed unless to prevent corrosion.
  • Temperature Exposure: Fiber core slings should not be exposed to temperatures above 200°F; non-fiber core slings should avoid temperatures above 400°F or below -60°F.
  • Storage: Store in a dry area, away from moisture, extreme heat, and potential damage.
  • Protection: Use corner saddles, burlap padding, or wood blocking to protect from sharp bends and cutting edges.
  • Overloading: Avoid heavy or continuous overloading and sudden jerks.
  • Proper Handling: Hang slings vertically when not in use.

Pre-Operational Daily Inspections

Daily inspections are crucial for safety:

  • Check for missing ID tags
  • Look for melted or charred areas
  • Inspect for excessive wear or elongation
  • Identify broken, kinked, or rusted wires
  • Check for acid or caustic burns
  • Examine broken or damaged fittings

Annual Inspections

OSHA 1910.184 requires a complete sling inspection yearly. Olsen Chain & Cable can conduct and document these inspections. Call 800-328-1906 to schedule your annual inspection.
