With winter comes a change in work conditions and a greater potential for risk to your people. It’s a good time to be refreshed on safety standards that help keep your people and your operation safe.
A fall arrest system is utilized to safely stop (arrest) a worker who is working at an elevated height. If your people are using personal fall arrest systems, it’s important that they understand both the functional operation of the equipment as well as the limitations and restrictions of it. They need to know how to properly install and fit the harness. They need to know what a fully-operational system looks like and how to identify if something is missing or a part is faulty. They need to understand a system’s capacity and an operation’s standards for determining safety equipment requirements. They need to know the do’s and don’t’s as well as the standards for proper maintenance.
Knowing how to use a fall arrest system means you’re adhering to manufacturers standards. Knowing when to use it means you’re abiding by OSHA’s guidelines for proper use, inspection standards, and maintenance requirements.
Remember, as business owners and managers, it’s up to us to make sure we’re protecting our people. Employees may consider safety protocols a nuisance and try to work around them. They cut corners and skip important steps not because they’re bad employees but because they’re not in the habit and discipline of safety. The protocols, however, are the difference between life and death.
